Frazione Caprile Inferiore

The district of Caprile inferiore (or Caprile basso) appears as a group of houses leaning against each other almost to form a fortified nucleus. Documents do not attest whether this locality had a role of military garrison in the past, however, its conformation and location at the mouth of the Val Mora along the ancient Via Mercatorum, which connected Bergamo with Valtellina, suggest that such a role, although not officially, was nevertheless exercised. The structure of the ancient and mighty stone portal that still stands there indicates that at one time the village could have been easily isolated from the outside, thanks in part to the probable presence of wall defenses.
It is plausible that the defensive function of lower Caprile was particularly exercised during the Middle Ages, coinciding with the bloody feuds resulting from the Guelph-Ghibelline struggles that also affected the upper Brembana Valley and the Averara Valley territory.
