The land around the Arera is full of tunnels excavated in the search for minerals. They mined zinc and lead, starting centuries ago and continued until recently. With its recreation of a tunnel and display of a large collection of tools and machinery for extracting and transporting minerals, the museum shows the reality of mining. Not just for reality’s sake, but to show how one of the few raw materials found in Italy is transformed, being discovered, mined and worked until it becomes a finished product for everyday use, involving laborious effort and significant sacrifice. An intimate knowledge of this mysterious world to pass on to future generations along with a healthy respect for our natural resources and their use. The museum is in 2 sections, minerals and mining.
