Old Parish Church Of Carona In Fiumenero

Piazza Vittorio Veneto
Carona

Description

The old parish church dedicated to San Giovanni Decollato is not today's mother church, but the one you come across as you enter the village at the hamlet of Fiumenero. It became an autonomous baptismal church in 1450.  It is a basilica-like building with three small naves, a presbytery raised by two steps and with a gate, and a gabled roof with exposed beams. It had three altars: the high altar, the altar of the Virgin Mary and the altar of Saint Peter the Martyr, patron saint of travellers.

Over time, the building became so deteriorated that it threatened to collapse that it was decided to build a new church.
