San Giovanni Bianco - Costa San Gallo

Description

The hamlet of Costa San Gallo is a small agricultural village of ancient origin, which has always been a municipality and parish.
The village became a hamlet of San Giovanni Bianco by order of Napoleon, but the Austrians cancelled the decision when they arrived in 1815; during the Fascist period they downgraded it back to a simple hamlet.

The village is situated on the left side of the valley in a higher position than the village of San Giovanni, from which you can enjoy an excellent view of the surrounding areas. There are two sacred buildings worthy of note: the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta, with a polyptych depicting the Madonna and the small church of the Trinity in a secluded position, on the road to the nearby town of Dossena.
Not far away there is the Sanctuary Madonna della Costa, built in baroque style because of numerous apparitions of St Mary in that place.

Enjoying a climate favorable to agriculture and breeding, it was chosen as a home by some peasant families, including the Gervasoni-Avogadro. In the woods there are still traces of the "coal squares", traces of the work of the charcoal burners.
