At 2.512 m, Mount Arera is the highest and most fascinating of the 4 in the upper Serina Valley. Its peak can be seen from the Bergamo plain and is a popular tourist destination. In the past it was famous for its many calamine mines, which although bricked up are still identifiable from the fencing. There are also some wonderful beech trees providing a little shade in the clearings in the woods. At 1600 metres there is the SABA mountain refuge with its characteristic red colour, easily visible from Oltre il Colle, and a little higher up the ex chair lift stop.
