The Iron Route (La Via Del Ferro)

Description

The "Iron Route" or the “Iron Road” offers a fascinating journey through a human history of mobility. It is the story of how routes for a commodity can coexist with natural preservation. The Iron Route connects the scenic Brembana Valley to the picturesque Valtellina and Valsassina regions. This ancient route was once a vital link for the transportation of iron and goods. It takes you through a series of breathtaking mountain passes like il passo San Marco and Piani di Bobbio. These two stand out as they are particularly accessible owing to their lower altitudes.

Despite the importance of this route the community which defined it, kept it under the guise of a simple mule track which in Italian is called semplice mulattiera, as a result this road could be traversed with only pack animals. The main route begins at the San Marco Pass, also known as the historic “Colmo di Albaredo,” where you’ll descend into the valleys of Mezzoldo or Averara, following the same ancient roads that traders and travellers once used.

For those seeking a more immersive experience, the eastern route will take you through the quaint districts of Mezzoldo, offering views of stunning hillsides as you descend towards Olmo or head directly to via the high altitude path Averara. Along the way, you’ll encounter Piazza Molini and ascend to the "Còla de Cus," a scenic ridge that touches the picturesque towns of S. Brigida and Cusio.

Adventure lovers will appreciate the lower variant of the route, which winds through the hidden gem of Val Stabina, leading you to the historic village of Valtorta. From there, the journey continues to the serene Ceresola basin, where you’ll cross the sun-drenched saddle of Bobbio and make your way to the lush landscapes of Valsassina.

Whether you’re a history buff, a nature enthusiast, or simply looking to explore the lesser-known treasures of Italy, the Iron Road offers a unique and unforgettable experience.
